Welcome to the Birth Toolbox Weekly.

Relax

Easier said than done, right? 😉

When real contractions hit one of the best things that you can do is to relax. The problem here is that the first instinct that we have when we feel contractions is to brace ourselves against them.

It’s a common reaction to tense us when you feel pain.

Unfortunately, when we tense up our muscles during a contraction it can lead to more pain with the contraction. This increase of pain with the contractions can then lead to fear of the next contraction. That increase in fear can often lead to more tension.

This is what we call the Fear-Tension-Pain cycle and BOY is this a real thing in labor.

So, how do we RELAX?

I have some great ideas, but couldn’t fit them into an email. Here’s a video all about it that I know you will enjoy. (it’s my best tip for labor!)

Even though it’s important to relax your muscles during a contraction, it is the last thing that support people should say to someone in labor!

“Release your muscles” is a great alternative to saying “RELAX”

If you are interested in learning more tips for the support person then you’ll really want to check out this video for Dads.
