Welcome to the Birth Toolbox Weekly.

Hydration

During pregnancy the task of during water can feel like a job.

For all stages of pregnancy, the recommendation is to drink 8 to 12 cups of water a day (which is 64 to 96 ounces). For most of us, it takes some effort to reach this goal.

Water is critical for your digestion and the removal of waste from your body. But don’t let your thirst level be what reminds you to drink. By the time you are thirsty, your body is probably already dehydrated.

If you are spending time outdoors, especially in warmer weather make sure you bring your water with you. I made the mistake of not hydrating enough during a Memorial Day picnic with my 2nd baby and I was diagnosed with low fluid levels at my ultrasound the following week!

Did you know that dehydration can lead to low amniotic fluid? Yes, it’s true! This is another great reason to stay on top of your water intake.

Low amniotic fluid can lead to:

  • Neural Tube Defects

  • Premature Labor
